Land of the Free, Home of the School Shootings

Daily writing prompt
How are you feeling right now?

Today’s prompt: how am I feeling right now?

It’s difficult to put into words. I’m frustrated, angry. I’m also concerned, and maybe even a little frightened.

There was yet another shooting on a campus yesterday, this time at the University of North Carolina. A faculty member was killed. It hit close to home — only thirty minutes from my own campus. I have a good friend who is a faculty member there.

We’ve just added to the number of students and faculty who have been through the terror of a live shooter and a lockdown. We’ve added to the list of those killed in the line of duty . . . the duty of teaching. When did being a teacher start feeling like a dangerous job?

It’s senseless. And there’s no end in sight, because too many of our lawmakers are in the pockets of the gun lobbyists.

How am I feeling? Like many other teachers, I imagine.

Check on your teacher friends.
